Lawns to Lunches Workshop Series 2009

There are a limited number of places, so be quick. Location of workshops is Cooma Uniting Church backyard, Soho Street.

The Soho Street backyard started as a typical lawn. Register for one or more workshops. Whether you already have a vegetable garden or if you're just starting out, change your lawn into food and get ready to plant!
Workshop One: create a no-dig vegetable patch, introduction to Permaculture principles, build soil and raise seeds
Saturday 5th September 9am - 12pm
Learn to build a “no-dig” vegie patch from scratch with an intro to permaculture principles. Test soil pH, and make a garlic patch. Garlic bulbs will be given away for participants to plant at home. Then we’ll be building soil and creating a higher vegie patch for easier access using recycled materials. There will also be seed raising tips, seedling mix making (potting media) and planting of early cold climate crops. Phoenix (Tasmanian heirloom seed company) seeds provided, please bring old “tetra” milk and juice containers if possible, or seedling pots.
Workshop Two: plant seedlings and consult gardening 'walking encyclopaedias'
Saturday 12th September 10am – 12pm
We will provide 'walking encyclopaedias' for our participants to consult. Meet some of Cooma's most experienced gardeners and have a chance to discuss growing food with these well-practised gardeners. Start to transplant some pre-prepared early hardy Spring seedlings like Rainbow Chard and take some home to plant in your vegie patch.
Workshop Three: mulch, frost protection and vegetable food
Saturday 19th September 10am – 12pm
The importance of mulch, frost protection, hardening off seedlings and feeding your soil and plants. Learn some specific ways to deal with the Monaro climate.
Workshop Four: special school holiday program for kids!
Wednesday 14th October 10.30am - 12pm
In conjunction with Cooma Library. We'll be having stories and then doing some gardening. Bookings essential: contact Sue Bailey at Cooma Library 6455 1732
Workshop Five and Seedling Swap
October 24th 2009 10am – 12pm
Seedling swap, soup, celebration plus bring us your tips, queries and calls for help. Come back to where it all began and assess the development of the no dig beds, the raised beds and climate protection elements of the garden at Soho St. Learn about succession planting. Free workshop then open to all from noon for seedling swap - food available.
Workshop Six: Christmas Celebration
Saturday 12th December
Come along and join us as we learn about what tricky things can affect the vegie patch plus there will be an opportunity to ask questions about your own garden with workshop facilitator Peter Mitchell. So come along and ask your questions, fill the garden beds, prune tomatoes and check existing plants for disease and fungus
This workshop is free. As it is our last workshop for 2009 we would like to celebrate the garden together. Please bring a plate of food to share at morning tea.
Workshop Seven: Kids Workshop
Thursday 14th January 10am - 12pm
Cooma Community Garden & Cooma Library proudly present the Summer Kids’ Workshop at the Cooma Community Garden, Uniting Church Grounds, Soho Street, Cooma. (School-age children only, parents/carers must stay) Morning Tea will be provided. We’ll be working on the gardens that were planted during the Spring ‘09 Kids’ workshop...We’ll be pruning the tomatoes, and checking to see whether the other plants are going okay…We’ll also do some summer planting and during morning tea, we’ll have some stories.
